The Concept of Parish Nursing:

Parish Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing operating within a congregation and or community. The nurse assists persons to become more aware of their health and to obtain holistic wellness through, education counseling, referral services, health fairs and health screenings. All of these efforts are focused towards empowering the individuals in the congregation and community to work towards physical, spiritual and emotional wellness. The parish nurse does not provide hands on nursing care, but rather directs persons in selecting appropriate health care providers. A parish nurse also works within the community to raise awareness of pertinent health issues and concerns.

The Role of the Parish Nurse:

•  To promote health education
•  To promote understanding of the relationship between lifestyle, faith and wellness.
•  To provide health information related to health issues across the lifespan.
•  To provide support and encouragement to those that may be facing life threatening
   illnesses.
•  To implement and execute health programs that focus on the whole person or total being.

•  Free Blood Pressure Screenings
•  Diabetes Education & Management
•  First Aid
•  Nutritional Counseling
•  General Health Information and Referrals
•  Medication Management
•  Referral to Community Services
•  Health & Wellness 

Health Counselor: 

• Discuss health needs regarding wellness, prevention and illness. 
• Provides assistance and support to individuals during times of crisis, chronic illness, and celebration.
